I lived in Iowa City for five years and everyone I knew called it the laser building - it was kind of a local nickname for it (a colloquialism if you prefer). I knew people on the rowing team (who keep their boats in the warehouse on the east side) who called it the laser building.
I can understand how you could have worked there and never heard it called that - only cool people knew it as the laser building, and based on your diligent (and, might I add, thoroughly scientific) fact-checking in reference to the IATL, you probably aren't very cool.
