Well, sometimes it's not even a hygienic problem, sometimes it's only because our stomachs are not used to eat the local specialities. I think of the salad sauce in Tunisia, for instance. However, it's 30 years ago ... ;-)

Yes, very similar. People were jumping in from the cliff into a very, very cold water.
It was not bad at all...no sulphur smell one would expect. The red color is from iron and white patches are calcium deposits. There are many mineral springs around and people swim/soak in them year round.
