Drebenstedt Langbett

Long Barrow with Chambered Tomb in Saxony-Anhalt.

Said to be the most impressive tomb in the 'Altmark'.

950m west of Drebenstedt, near the small way to Lindhof, you can see the shape of the Long Barrow. The 44m x 6m/7.5m barrow is very well preserved, most of the kerbstones are still in place. 53 of the most likely 58 stones have survived. The barrow is oriented in NW-SE direction. At the NW corner stands a very impressive corner stone, a guardian stone (Wächterstein). On the top of the guardian, a number of cup marks are visible. The barrow had guardians on each corner, its just that the other three have fallen.

The 8.8m x 1.9m chamber, located in the NW end of the barrow, is also well preserved. 13 orthostats ('Wandsteine') of most likely 16 are deep in the ground of the still 1.7m high barrow, and four capstones are still resting on the chamber. Its a 'Grossdolmen', an Extended Dolmen with seven pairs of uprights on the long sides. There are further remains, most likely fragments of another bursted capstone, treated with explosives.

There have been same calculations about the barrow, regarding the the mass of stones that had to be moved and about how much people/working hours were necessary to build it up.

Based on a ten hours working day, 100 people would have needed between 40 and 60 days...
