its your last wish?
On 29 November, the artists of the Jardin d'Alice , at 40 rue de La Chapelle, make keys which was a place of creation and sharing for almost 5 years. Paris -Habitat , owner, has to start a construction of social housing in this small area , occupied by the group in backyard , as well as the last three longtime tenants .
The 40 rue de la Chapelle and his famous garden survival from a time when Montmartre and La Chapelle were not related to Paris (1860) . The suburban houses surrounded the city and vegetable gardens were numerous and where the urban fabric is now densified concrete . Many orchards exist in the northeast of the capital until the 1960s.
Alice White was the owner of 38, 40 and 42 rue de La Chapelle , and lived there with her husband until his death in 2005. Artists learned by the family that the couple was in love with art and the house was the headquarters of General Leclerc during the Liberation . High and beautiful cellar under the house itself dates from the early Middle Ages time of vineyards in the area!
Garden therefore existed for several centuries, but the story of the Garden of Alice we know it today began in March 2009 when five precarious artists (some from the group of 59Rivoli ) decide to illegally invest site property Paris- Habitat , abandoned and no immediate plans . The group settles shared artistic workshops , cleans and rehabilitates abandoned in a shared garden space , welcoming , moving or planting beds in areas where ailanthes , nettles and brambles invading everything. Then were born here sculptures, benches , floor, a green hut and ... the famous dry toilets in the garden , which even later served as a model to promote the use in gardens Charter Main Verte !
Four years of exchanges , creation ... and rest !
The arrival of the group has made this private garden open trade , rest or creative place . Sara , initiator and pillar of this alternative location , said the number of spaces or not misused, forgotten crevices too small for the huge urban projects underway in the North East of Paris , but big enough to help and precarious boost local life. The artist collective - squatters or " squartistes " believes that viable but empty buildings can and should be held alternately and collective , rather than deteriorate into oblivion, full housing crisis.
In 2010, after a year of negotiations , and with the support of the City and local elected officials including Pascal Julien and Danielle Fournier , signing an occupancy Precarious Convention allowed the legalization of community on the site , and proved that a relationship of trust between owner and occupant is possible.
The initiative of the collective and its legalization have helped hundreds of artists to work , rehearse, create freely welcomed in virtually free residence and present their works to the public in the large garden of 800 m2. It was a sensible place daily gardening , work, party, meetings for residents. To play on a bench , plant , breathe or listen blackbirds .
