Ed Swanzey's conversations

CHURCH OF THE FORTY-NINERS. Originally built in 1857, it burned to the ground in 1950. It was replicated and dedicated by the town of Columbia in 1955. Roy Lane , artist and carpenter, was the local contractor who designed and built the church. This church is one of the few institutions in Columbia that has not been bastardized and embalmed by a very stupid state park system. The fact that it is not the original building, but a restoration, is probably why the state leaves it alone. I KNOW this church. I worked on its restoration in 1954. My mother was the choir director -- a brilliant and much loved one. We must eliminate the California State Park system. It is overpaid and underworked. Replace their laughable "law enforcement" personnel with proven managers, and let the town live again. They have almost ruined it.

This is the old Pay Ore Saloon. It was once the home and gallery of world-renowned artist Charles Surendorf. The California State Parks department forced him out of business, because they did not like the way he dressed, or his unconventional outlook. The townspeople loved him, and he taught me a great deal about art. We must eliminate the state park system, and replace their laughable "law enforcement" people with managers.

Yes it's so much hen bu hao indeed... Use the "history image" tool bar on google earth to scan this area, and you would see how the historical centre of Tianjin vanished... And so on in Beijing and basically everywhere in the "modernizing" China. Sign.

It's already gone I'm afraid that I have to tell you... Demolished and replaced by a temporary car parking lot as you can see from google earth... And I'm nearly 100% sure that the brick carvings were stolen and sold...

Thanks for your concern and understanding of my works anyway. At least their once-appeared beauty could be caught and appreciated by you...which makes me feel really grateful and delighted.

I would much rather live in a house with four hundred years of spirits in it and NO modern "conveniences", than a new tall apartment building with no character at all. Keep up the good work.

This is very good. The light is perfect to allow you to see and understand the whole building.

Thank you sir,

The place gets into your soul, and there's no way to get away from it. My great grandfather was here for a while, my father lived here during the Depression, and I grew up here. My mom taught at SUHS, and Tuolumne. I'm back after fifty some years, what can I say . . . . ?

Again, many thanks for your comment.

Ed
