This is the western side of the bridge. All three gliders landed between the tree and the flag poles on the other side of the river. Landing at just ater midnight, they were the FIRST Allied soldiers to land in the invasion. A German sentry though their landing were pieces of an aircraft falling, so, taken by complete surprise, the British soldiers captured the bridge in minutes. The first allied soldier to die of enemy fire was here, a Lt Brotheridge. Except, one soldier did die before him. He was thrown out of his glider, landed in the marsh and drowned. Ranville Cemetry is the last resting place of many of these Paratroopers

Dead Mans Corner. The advancing American units came along the road to the right, from St Marie Du Mont an Utah Beach. However, they oun well defended German Paratroopers here which used this house as an aid station. An American tank was knocked out on the corner of the road, its commander hanging out of the turret. It was a while before he was removed, thus 'Dead Mans Corner'.

This is one from inside the paratrooper museum at St Mere Eglise. Of all the museums I went to, this was, for me, the best. Though I din't go to the Caen Memorial.
