ZUR ERINNERUNG LUCY GRÄFIN CHRISTALNIGG 10. AUGUST 1914; Countess "Christalnigg von Oberstein" was on her way by car from Klagenfurt via Predil Pass to Görz as a Red-Cross-Committee-member of that time. In the near of Serpenizza some Austro-Hungarian Gendarms wanted to control her. She had got a governmental travel-permit and so did not stop. She was inadvertently shot at this place in the beautiful mountain-scenery.

At this corner on June 28th 1914 the radical Serb Gavrilo Princip assassinated the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne Franz Ferdinand an his wife Sofia. According to this the Austro-Hungarian Emperor declared war to the Serbian Nation, herewith prompting WW I .

Wreck-Site of the German Light Cruiser SMS Königsberg, destroyed 1915 in the Rufiji-Delta by the Royal Navy. Her guns were removed by the serving crew and brought to the railway workshops in Dar-es-Salaam where temporary gun-carriages were fashioned to enable the German Schutztruppe to use them on land. This gun is one of two 88mm pieces kept in the hold of the Königsberg for arming merchant ships. It was abandoned by her detachment in Sept. 1916 after a shell apparently exploded in the barrel.

Kruger National Park, Makuleke Area, Crooks Corner, Ruins of John Fernandez` Toilet. Fernandez ran a store nearby from the mid 1950`s until 1969 and then had the first "modern" toilet in the Pafuri area in whatever kind of a small building.

Kruger National Park, Makuleke Area, Crooks Corner, The Ruins of John Fernandez` Store close to Pafuri air-strip, which was in use from the mid 1950`s until 1969 when the Makuleke Tribespeople were removed by force from the Area by the then Apartheid Regime. The broken down store-counter still visible.

Kruger National Park, Makuleke Area, Remains of the old Makuleke Store which was the center of activity during the wild days of Crooks Corner; Built in 1910 by Alex Thompson and William Pye, the store became property of the trader W. Borchers in 1912 and was managed by Buck Buchanan until 1919, then it was sold to Morty Ash who ran it until ~1938, then Sam Majika took over until mid-50s, the last owner was John Fernandez who dismanteled it and used the material for 2 new stores.

Kruger National Park, Von Wielligh`s Baobab Tree, G. R. von Wielligh was one of the original surveyors of the Transvaal Border with Mozambique. He carved his name in the bark of the tree in 1891.

Stopped here in Sept. 2011. Tree still there, a reminder of how slowly Leadwood Trees grow. Site in good shape.

The memorial plaque needs to be restored (like most in Kruger).

More information about the transport riders and their trails needs to made available.

Hi Trudi, thank you for your reply to my photo. I hope that you like it. I am a visitor to whole Southern Africa since 25 years. My favourite was always Zimbabwe, Namibia and South Africa. The situation in Zimabwe is not very funny and I better stay away, Namibia is going a very wrong way into luxury-tourism. I dont like the expensive places and so have reduced my travelling to the Kruger National Park and surroundings. Why do you write everything in Afrikaans? Hi Christian! Sorry to say, but I think there is no "affordable way" to get there. I work since many years on expedition-cruiseships that go to all this polar regions. To Krischs grave I went with the russian icebreaker dranitzyn, but those trips are very expensive for the guests, about 10.000 Euro each. The same for the canadian arctic, where we do the north western passage and see all those places. So its very nice to work there an go for free ... Feel free to ask more. Arne
