This gallery is about my summers working at Columbia Ward Fisheries (CWF) from 1979-1983. All of the pictures in this gallery are digitized from 35mm slides or scanned from prints, so I apologize for the very low quality of some of the shots. I have arranged this gallery in groups (see tags) to chronicle my experience with the salmon fishing industry. Sadly, I have lost many photos that I had taken which would have made this "story" more complete.....
First group of 7 photos is my leaving for Alaska for the first time.
Second group is the layout of the CWF cannery.
Third group is the preparation for the salmon fishing season.
Fourth group is the fishing and bringing the salmon to the cannery for processing.
Fifth group is the cannery operation.
Sixth group is the freezer plant operation.
Seventh group is the end of the summer.
Eighth group is the people that I worked with.
Ninth and last group is some of the scenery as it existed back then.
I hope that you enjoy this historical reconstruction. I will not be adding any more photos to this gallery. There are links to three different YouTube videos in the description section of the associated photograph (they can be foun in my Tags under "Video Links"). The videos show 1) the piledriver operating, 2) a vacuum system taking salmon from fishing boats, and 3) bringing a fishing boat out of the river using the steam donkey and a cradle.
My best wishes to all of you, and thank you in advance for your comments and any questions that you may have regarding these photos.
