i get it...they washed up on a desert island...they waited for years, searching the horizon hoping for rescue..then they set up statues to get noticed,with exagerated features(humans on the horizon aren't very noticable-try waving your arms for 50+ years!)..no help came..their offspring continued the tradition through the generations..losing sight of the original meaning..of their longing for rescue..
