My dad, Jack Wheatley, lived in Ashtabula with his family upon arrival from Scotland to America from 1925 to 1939. Dad had 2 sisters, Anne (who married Tom Garvey) and Winnie (who married Bill Donaldson). His father, also born in Scotland--like the rest of the family--was the golf pro at what was originally known as the Ashtabula Country Club, now Harbor CC until 1939+/-. My grandfather, John Cobb Wheatley, then became the golf pro at the Painesville Country Club. My father also attended and graduated from Harbor High School (now an empty, flat field across from the Hubbard House)& played on the football team before going to Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, into WWII, then completing his undergraduate work at OWU. On the 16th of April, 2011--his 89th birthday--he, I and my youngest daughter, Kelsey returned to Ashtabula for a trip down memory lane. The Hubbard House really caught my attention. When I recall the nursery rhyme and "Mrs. Hubbard's cupboard," I can only imagine the slaves looking for/racing for their freedom/safety and hoping to make it to this safe house! Then the thought of the boat ride across Lake Erie to Canada and to freedom blows me away! That the City has not allowed history to loose this important residence is a point of pride for every Ohioan. Thank you Ashtabula.

It's Bridge Street now but it was West Fifth when I lived in the harbor area. It was all dive bars and boarded up buildings. It is nice to see that it has been revitalized.

It sounds like you could add a lot of history to photos of the area. I'd be interested in hearing more about the history. I plan to take more photos soon and geotag them to insure their accurate location... I'd appreciate your comments.

Wasn't this the Post Office building at one time?? Caddy-corner across from the old gingerbread City Hall at the end of 44th Street?

We visited The Sullivans DD537 in October, 2007. Many fond memories, as I served on the Owen DD536 1955-1958 in the Pacific. The Sullivans is a Fletcher Class . . . I felt 18 years old again.
