In 1949 I started my first job on the " Ryde " at the age of 15. Engine room boy at a wage of £1.17.6. for a 44 hour week.Sheer purgatory, the engineers were tyrants.Worked on the other paddlers, Sandown, Whippingham, Merstone.Great little ships but coaling them was a nightmare and basic washing facilities when you finished. I was glad to join the M.N proper and go deep sea. I`ve been to see the " Ryde ", she looks very sad and will sail no more.
