One fine day in 1972 one of my father's officers lost control of a R/C model plane he was flying off the old airfield. He took a compass reading and them came and got me and some of my boy scout buddies. We put on our boonie stomping clothes grabbed our machetes and headed off in the jungle. We didn't find his model, but we did find this baby. At least I assume it is the same plane (though I didn't think it was a corsaid). Around it were stack a lot of large shells. I went to pick one up and the adult present (an EOD officer) said, put that down, it is a tracer shell, contains phosperous and could still go off.
We didn't take any souveniors. And if it wasn't this plane, then there are others in the same area............
Yes there was definitely monkeys on that small island. We took several trips down the old spanish stairs to that wonderful hidden beach. I never saw any monkeys on the big island, but they were certainly on those small islands in the picture in 1970-72. I never saw a snake on the island but understand now they are an epidemic nuisance.
The only way to get to Larch Mountain is by hiking, unless you can get the lumber company to open the gate. But it is not a hard hike.
hmmmm. I looked at some pictures and I don't recall ever seeing this flower anywhere in the forest.
I am suspicious that you have the wrong Larch Mountain. The one in this picture is in the Tillamook forest. The more famous one is backup behind Multnomah falls.

Wow, I wonder how one gets there.
you know. in 1972 I lived a block away from this thing. Used to explore the jungle all the time (a boy scout) and never new this was here.
Damn.

Jim, I would love to hear more stories about the train line from Banks to Vernonia. If you care to put some stories down, I would love to read them.

Thank you very much and gretings from Spain.
That does make more sense. So I guess the road used to be a rail line?
