Once a private home in Mount Barker this building has served many purposes, including being used as a recuperation centre for personnel during World War II. In recent years it has been restored and additions made to be a tavern and theatre complex.
This leads to an elevator which takes you to the top of the hill. it is the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and was constructed in the early part of the 20th century.
This hotel/motel was part of the development of the West Lakes area from the tidal/swamp area of the Port River. It is adjacent to a large shopping mall and further development which is still taking place (2007).

AS West Lakes is primarily a residential development, many of the residents adjacent to the lake are able to have their private pontoon.
