Hello. I'm Evelyn Ward who took the photo. I also have personal connection with Commonbrae. My family had it for a summer-holiday home for a few weeks in 1949. I really loved that place. We were in the upper, stone-built house, and a family called Nichol lived in the lower, timber-built house.

Thank you. I love the place too.

You are quite wrong. That IS the path to Fatlips Tower. The woman in the picture is on her way to the foot of the Minto Crags, and later climbed all the way up the steep path, through the woods, to the tower at the top. Are you saying that the viewpoint is misplaced on the map? Fatlips, by the way, is not a castle: it is only a small tower-house.

My father, James Archibald Patterson Matthew was born here, son of William and Joan. I was born in Edinburgh in 1937, I have visited the town on my travels--a beautiful place[I now live in NZ] I would love to know if there are any relatives of the Matthew family still in the area, my grandmother was a Johnstone{ not too sure of the spelling. Lovely pics, thanks Freda Matthew

Thank you for your suggestion relating Hawick. If you want, look my blog. I have put 2 post of scotland. Have a nice day.

The Parks Department men had just finished working on this garden, when I took this photo. They will be delighted at this kind comment. Thanks John Feg.
