Menczel-Kiss Gergely's conversations

My ancestor, John Bridge "The Puritan" is interred here.He was a member of Hooker's company that left Braintree, Essex County, England, in 1631. In 1632 settled in this city and became a leading citizen. When he came to this country he brought with him two sons,Matthew,1615 - 1700, Thomas, about 1622 - 1656 And a sister ElizabethWho became the wife of John Betts Esq. and died January 2, 1664. John bridge was one of the first to donate towards the creation of New College which would later be renamed Harvard College in 1639. John is reputed to have given £50 to the infant college in 1638,This would make him at least a benefactor, if not a Founder, as it is claimed. John went on to have a very distinguished career. He filled almost all the offices of honor and trust within the gift of his fellow citizens and was greatly esteemed for his integrity and Christian virtues. He was a large landholder in Cambridge as well as other parts of the colony, He died April 15, 1665. There are a number of his descendents nterred here, Including his two sons Matthew and Thomas a'snd a grandson Samuel. A statue of John" The Puritan" is in Harvard Square/ Cambridge Commens about two blocks away from here, at the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Wate house street.
