Desert4wd's conversations
This was a shared ranch by the Wilcox's (my great grandparents) and another family. My grandparents (Tommy and Dorthy Wilcox) used to take us camping here for our summer vacation as kids. The Wilcox Ranch moved down into the valley next to the Sacramento River. Wilcox ranch used to be a large working cattle ranch and the Wilcox's were very active in the community and settling the area. Roosters Landing fishing resort was sold to Gene the current owner by the Wilcox's. Also nearby is the coleman fish hatchery. 8o acres

The truck is a Dodge Power-Wagon which is registered to the wife of Bobby Beausoleil. Bobby Beausoleil was a member of the infamous Charles Manson Family, who are responsible for the Tate/LaBianca murders in Los Angeles in August of 1969. In September 1969, Manson Family members Sherry Ann Cooper and Barbara Hoyt fled Barker Ranch (20 miles from Ballarat up Goler Wash) and made it to Ballarat in the truck which was nearly out of gas. Upon finding out that the girls were missing, Charles Manson hightailed it down to Ballarat saying he wanted to give them some money for their trip. I was at Ballarat when the girls showed up and they asked me to give them a ride into town (Trona), to which I said yes, I would. I met and talked to Charles Manson, who invited me to visit him at the Barker Ranch. - I didn't go, and that's probably why I'm alive today to talk about it.

The aerial tramway bucket seen in the pitcher carried ore from the mines to the Godbe Mill. The tramway was used in 1920s and 1930s, used for transporting silver and nickel ore. The tramway is now abandoned but its cable and buckets still stretch over part of the town and highway 50 to the old Godbe Mill, even to this day.

What's cool about this area is that in the late 1860's and into the 1870's, thousands of people traveled these ranges and occupied this entire area which was known as the White Pine District. Hamilton, Treasure City, Shermantown. Each had newspapers, city councils, miners, families and much more. Life was difficult and the dry months were very short, particularly at this altitude which is about 9000'. Lots of history and ghosts in these quite hills.
