Matt Phillips's conversations

Thanks for your feedback on the Easedale photo, Matt. I first drove over this bridge 26 years ago. I lived in London then and it seemed immensely far away. Now I live in Oban and it's just round the corner. Funny how things work out! I'm hoping to visit Durness next week. Even from Oban, Cape Wrath seems immensely far away. Scotland's a far largely place than even Scottish people believe. Ian

I learned to swim the hard way here - when I was about 7 or 8 we stayed in Easedale, and took the little ferry (a man in a boat with an outboard motor) to the island. All the rest of my family could swim, and were having a great time swimming in the flooded mine. My dad told me it was time I learned to swim - and threw me in!

I learned to swim, very quickly!

Even in what looks like rather dull weather, it still looks beautiful! I can't wait to have another holiday there...

A familiar view, though not with the line of cars waiting for the ferry. Now the cars would probably be parked for the Ballachulish Hotel

I had some slides taken there in 1971, while I was waiting to cross on the ferry from North Ballachulish.

The image can be improved somewhat with a bit of Photoshop-ing.

These huge stepping stones are in Stainforth near Settle. It is a beautiful village, in typical Yorkshire Dales surroundings. The river was flowing quite fast after a couple of days' rain. Surprisingly the rocks, though wet, were not slippery, thankfully. My wife and children let me try this out first, though!

The Forbidden Corner is a fantastic place to visit, for people young and old - so long as they don't mind a few dark, narrow places, and a few creepy surprises. I've been a few times and love it, so do my children, and so does my dad. Have a look at their website - HERE - and before anyone says so, they haven't paid me for this!

Cayton Bay is a popular place for families who want to enjoy the seaside without having to worry about the kids nagging to go on the amusements - there aren't any! There is a hefty hike from the car-park which is up on the cliff top, but the unspoiled beach is worth it. This is the view looking up towards Scarborough, which is about 3 miles up the coast.

This was the view towards the Langdale Pikes mountains, in November 2004. It was taken from a hillside about 5 miles south of High Bentham. As can be seen, the lower ground was just cold, but higher up, there was a lovely covering of snow.

This is the view towards Portuairk, as seen from the beautiful Sanna bay. The water here is crystal clear, and is great for snorkelling or scuba diving. The highest hill in the background is where I took the photo looking over Portuairk, which can also be seen on this site.
