Chris Hoepker's conversations

I took this photo as we were heading west on a Trans-Sierra skitour in early March of 1967. 40+ years later, I scanned in the slides from that trip and uploaded a few into Panoramio. I had a faint memory of the lake as being Lake Merced and using a profile with my National Geographic TOPO, picked a possible camera location. Then I took the coordinates of the location and went to Google Earth/Panoramio. Thanks to both you, rjdphoto, and to Qiloff for your interest.

Thanks for the compliment, Corey. However, honesty compels me to admit that I did not take it myself. Back in the 50's when I was growing up on this farm, which my father rented, some company made aerial photos of the farms and offered prints for sale. Some time ago, I scanned it in and posted it on Panoramio thinking it might be an interesting comparison to how it looks today. Unlike most of the old small family farms, this one is occupied by an active farmer. Interestingly enough, at least 4 of the old buildings are still standing and seem to be maintained. Gone, however, are the livestock - exactly the thing that made driving through farm country interesting.

take it for a frenchman to mistake Balzers for Vaduz lol

On the trail to Seta.

I hope the ongoing mountain road improvement project does not destroy this beautiful historic section of mountain road!

Thank you so much for sharing this photo. A friend of ours spoke often of how he longed for the solitude of Blueberry Island...

Yes, if you have members of your party who are non-US citizens or non-green card holders. If all members of your party are US citizens and/or green card holders, you can get a Remote Area Border Crossing Permit from Canadian Immigration. In 2008, we had two German citizens along and to enter from the US side, we had to put in at Crane Lake and enter Canada at the Sandpoint Canada Customs Station.

Dunstan Lake lies well within the boundaries of Woodland Caribou Park, no border of which is accessible by car. having come in by way of the Chukuni River, we were about 9 days into our trip. Coming from one of the more southerly access points, Dunstan Lake could be reached in several days by canoe. On the other hand, one could probably fly in with a float plane from Red Lake.

Crazy. I'd love to hike out there at this time of year...

It is about 25 miles southwest of Mono Lake. Use the path with the measuring rule on.
