Robert Miller's conversations

Hi Robert, we're currently trying to stop an oil operation from expanding in this canyon and would really like to feature some of your photos in a slideshow on our webpage at SaveSantaPaulaCanyon.org - would you mind giving us permission to do so?

Thanks,

Tanner at Los Padres ForestWatch

Is that Margret Lakes on the far right?

The trail enters a chute near the lower falls. Approximately 100 ft DOWN the chute from that point there will be a large boulder ~8 ft high. Near the boulder and to the left of it is where the trail exits the chute and continues to the upper falls. The exit is not clearly defined and is easily overlooked, but if you look closely you will see it. Beyond the upper falls the trail ceases to exist so you have to pick your way up the stream bed as best as possible. Plan on getting wet!

Looks about the same as it did in 1964.

This is a beautiful area up here in Pine Mountain Club and I love to see the snow photo's.

This looks like it's in Colby Canyon, off of the Angeles Crest Highway, East of Switzer's Picnic Area. It's near the start of one of the trails that goes up to Strawberry Peak, the highest in that part of the San Gabriel Mountains. According to the latest info (8/31/2009) this within the burn area of the Station Fire.

Are you THE Robert Miller?! If so (and even if not), these are beautiful (and also geologically significant, no doubt), photos! I came upon them while trying to follow my wife's progress on her trek along the John Muir Trail, which is currently in process... It's really cool to be able to follow their daily progress (thanks to Google Maps, a GPS device, and all these wonderful photos)... How I wish I were there!!!

You should do fine on this trail. Decades ago when I was a Boy Scout we would use this trail to test our youngest members. This trail is perfect for first timers.

You can camp if backpacking. Vehicles must be parked back on highway 150.

I believe this in Los Padres National Forest.

I made a Google map with more info about this trail here http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&t=h&msa=0&msid=103931085860222248255.0004481c12ba160f3c06c&ll=34.454342,-119.061928&spn=0.108426,0.152092&z=13

Really enjoying your photos Robert, especially your Kings Canyon pano's and this SP canyon hike. I've been told by several hikers on different occasions that this pool is actually the Punch Bowl, and it's been described as such on many websites. I've referred to it as that myself, not knowing better. I was following your hike photos and noticed that although you came near it, you don't have any posted pics of the place labeled The Punch Bowl by Google Maps, another mile up the canyon. Got any pics of it? Would appreciate you letting us in on your knowledge, perhaps by checking out my site planetrambler.com
