Aptly named because in years gone by, the coal ships and barges brought coal from Newcastle and unloaded it here for the villageers to collect. Ed

The bridge in the photo is NOT known as cockup bridge, it is the bridge the photographer is standing on that is cockup bridge. I am a local age 73 and have fished this river for over 60 years.
