These two rectangular dock areas used to be dry docks in the Fellows & Stewart shipyard. In 1974 the ship I was on was dry docked here for bottom cleaning & painting. From our upper decks we could look down into the exercise yard of the Terminal Island Federal Prison next door. On May 17, 1974 the SLA engaged in a shootout with Los Angles police. Some SLA associates were in that prison and, apparently fearing a possible effot to break them out, the road to the prison was swarming with law enforcement all day. Distinctly remember seeing a plain Ford sedan carriyng four guys in black suits and sunglasses. FBI, most likely. I've seen the "men in black."
