I used to haunt this place a lot as a younger man. My "home territory" is now all of North America and I only get back to Ontario infrequently. I'd heard that there was a controversy but didn't explore the details.
And I would not be adverse to this picture being used as publicity for preserving this site.
Last I checked aspen only had zanthophylls and not carotinophylls. I studied in forestry, but in the east -- so I could be wrong.
These were not Populus tremuloides or deltoides or grandidentata. Certainly not alba or nigra or balsamifera. Possibly fremontii?? My take was that they were young Betula papyrifera.
But if you have insights into the particular genus and species that an eastern forester might lack I would welcome hearing it.
