JanSalberg's conversations

Roofs have been covered with turf (Torv) since prehistoric times in Scandinavia. The established name of "turf" may lead one to believe that the turf is the most important part of the roof, but the turf is only the visible outer layer. Bjørkeneveren below is just as important. The two teams each have their own function. Birch bark roof makes relatively waterproof, so that pace slowed and mønestokken decay. The content of phenols in birch bark makes it stays for years, although it is more or less constant wet. Peat comply with birch bark in place and acts as insulation. On hot days, the moisture from the sod roof make sure it does not become too hot inside. You can read more at: http://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torvtak#Litteratur
