Sweet Springs (the town) was named Brownsville prior to 1887. Before that, it was called Claysville.

Anyhow, by the 1870s the spring was popular enough to support a hotel with all the extras. This was probably due to the spring being so near to a railroad depot. If you were not physically well, the attraction of a healing spring so near to the railroad would have been very powerful.

As the spring gained in popularity, the town benefited from the influx of wealthy travelers and ultimately they named their town after the springs. The craze of healing springs started to die out by 1890-1910 and many of them went out of business at this time. It was very common for them to shift gears and become swimming pools.
