The monstrosity known locally as the Parthenon was built in the early 1980's by Arturo Durazo, who was chief of police of the Districto Federal de la Ciudad de Mexico, with the proceeds of illegal activities. It was confiscated by the Mexican government and Sr Durazo sent into exile in the United States. Sometime in the 1990's under a change of presidents,Sr Durazo was allowed to return to Mexico and the property was returned to him. When it was first built the Parthenon dominated the view of Zihuatanejo bay.It is now overgrown and barely noticeable, but still patrolled by armed guards. This is the first close-up picture I've seen of it.
