This is locally known as THE BIG ROCK, and Native legend has it that it is a bear. The story goes like this. "Some bears were playing near the water on the mainland, and it soon came about that they should have a contest. The contest would be to see who couldjump from the mainland to Vancouver Island without touching the water, as this would turn them to stone. The biggest bear went first and didn't quite make it to shore, turning to stone instantly and ending the contest."
