Mike Purchine's conversations

oct 3 2016. I drove out here today and the cabin is completely gone. I could still see plastic pipe on the ground that is probably the same pipe we used to take a shower in about 1978. The mine had water in it then and through gravity we could take a shower at the cabin outsie of course. It was cold water inside the mine and warm after the run of black pipe. I found other verticle and horizontal shafts nearby. The fire realy burned large portions of this whole area.

It's all gone, now.

Where are Huey & Louie ?

Beautiful Country!

I have uploaded a less-interesting picture taken at the same location, same time, but the camera is lowered about three feet.

The geotag for this photo is accurate (within GPS standards), and the barest outline of the barrier fence across the highway can be seen in the Google Earth image for this area, just down and to the right of the photo mark in Google Earth.

When it first appeared, the Bronco was stuck in the middle of the road below the current abandoned gate posts. The steering gear had broken and it was not driveable.

There was a bypass route - a real cliffhanger - to the north that allowed use of the road. Then the owner "fixed" the truck and managed to move it up to where this picture was taken.

It broke again and he left it sitting in the road, totally blocking access.

I used a highlift jack to raise and shift the vehicle to the edge of the road. It then got a wheel stuck in a low spot where the water had drained off the road. So I jacked up the uphill side and it rolled off the edge of the road. However, that was NOT where it was shown in this picture. Someone else came along and somehow managed to shove it way down into the canyon.

I don't know how they got it out but it took several tries. I can see where some massive trees were pulled out during the process. They also bushwhacked a trail above the site, presumably for the winching vehicle.

Amazing pan shot!

Thanks.

I was only there that one time in Nov 2008, and there had been some decent rain in the previous week. At that time I visited, the road probably wasn't passable, depending upon what you drive; the river looked about four to six feet deep in most places. Too deep for my Rincon. :-)

Now, in the middle of July? I don't know, but FWIW, I'd guess the river's pretty low, and probably doable.

Gardenstown HArbor

My son hit a boulder and ran into the stump high on the left which tore his fingernail off his clutch hand. End of the trip...didn't make Crown King that year, but we conquered it yesterday! Pretty gnarly trail...
