Originally named Pyote Army Air Field, it later became Pyote Air Force Station, AKA "Rattlesnake Bomber Base."
Many WWII bomber pilots were trained here. This historical marker commemorates 381st Bomb Group, the first bomber group trained here.

Now a ghost town, Shafter was once a silver mining "company town" where the miners were totally dependent on the company. Though not obvious from the picture this is a rather large town cemetery.

This bridge over the Pecos river near where it empties into the Rio Grand is the tallest bridge in Texas. It's also on the edge of Amistad International Reservoir, a lake formed by the Rio Grand and shared with Mexico.
