Winters in Scotland are dark, wet, and windy, in a maritime climate driven by the warm(ish) north Atlantic gulf stream current, with prevailing winds from the south-west. At 57 degrees North, Aberdeen is on the same latitude as the centre of Hudson Bay in Canada, but ice in the rivers here is rare. There are only 5 or 6 significant snow-falls in an average winter. The coldest conditions come in on North-easterly winds out of the Scandinavian Arctic which can bring heavy smowfalls to Aberdeenshire and the Grampian Highlands. Temperatures generally stay close to freezing at such times, and can drop as low as -20C.

This picture was painted in 1993 by local artist Doug Bates who always enjoyed capturing the changing moods of water and sky.
