When we are in Rockport, my absolute favorite place to indulge on carbs is at Helmut's Strudel. They have strudels in different flavors (apple, cherry, and cheese) and they are all absolutely delicious.

When visitors enter the grounds of The Breakers, many are overwhelmed—the place more than hints at wealth and power. Maybe that is because it looks like what it is, a product of three generations of Vanderbilt fortune-building. When "Commodore" Cornelius Vanderbilt died in 1877—a man who parlayed a boyhood Staten Island ferry business into a multi-million-dollar steam-ship line and later consolidated the New York Central and Hudson Railroads—he left an estate of $100 million, at the time the largest pile ever made in America. When his oldest son and heir, William Henry, died in 1885 he left $200 million—having doubled the family fortune in just eight years. At that point, William Henry's oldest boy, Cornelius II, became chairman of the board of the family railroad empire, Head of the House of Vanderbilt, and personal inheritor of a $67 million piece of the family pie.

The Breakers was built as the Newport summer home of Cornelius Vanderbilt II, a member of the wealthy United States Vanderbilt family. Designed by renowned architect Richard Morris Hunt and with interior decoration by Jules Allard and Sons and Ogden Codman, Jr., the 70-room mansion boasts approximately 65,000 sq. ft. of living space. The home was constructed between 1893 and 1895 at the then-astronomical cost of more than seven million dollars (approximately $150 million in today's dollars adjusted for inflation). The Ochre Point Avenue entrance is marked by sculpted iron gates and 30-foot high walkway gates are part of a twelve-foot-high limestone and iron fence that borders the property on all but the ocean side. The 150' x 120' dimensions of the five-story mansion are aligned symmetrically around a central Great Hall.
Part of a 13-acre estate on the seagirt cliffs of Newport, it sits in a commanding position that faces east overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

One of the best loved views on the Maine coast is from the summit of Mount Battie. The allure of the mountain derives not from its size (shy of 800 feet high), but from its prime location above the town of Camden and its bare summit ledges affording outstanding panoramic views of Penobscot Bay.
