Jay Reeve's conversations

You are probably right... I am neither botanist nor taxonomist, so I just recognize oak leaves and acorns, but I thought their vivid green was beautiful against the otherwise-parched landscape. Thanks for your comments!

Austin, I didn't realize it could be spotted from I-90, but I suppose it's possible if you peer up the Belle Fourche valley. I first visited the tower as a youngster, long before the movie "Close Encounters" brought it to popular awareness, and have revisited it several times. It is a unique and fascinating geological phenomenon, as well as a historical and cultural icon, and every bit as impressive as it looks in the photos. On this last trip we planned a night in Gillette to try to get to the tower with some morning shadows. Failed on the timing (arriving about noon), but still got a few decent shots. A visit adds only about 30 miles to the trip across WY, but you need to plan a few hours at the site. If weather is decent, take the hike around the base. (It was too HOT on this trip, so we just walked a few hundred yards and headed back.)

I believe the shape to which you refer is a combination of our bus's shadow and that of a tree on the ground. Anyway, thanks for looking; glad you like it.

I'll say reluctantly that I think it's outside the "Window Views" parameters, but it's a wonderful picture, Jay! Very well observed and photographed.

Cheers, Marilyn

Thank you, Marilyn. When I woke up that November morning to discover this phenomenon, I went running for my camera. I've never seen anything quite like it before or since. I'm glad for an opportunity to show it off in "Window Views."

Marilyn, how delightful to hear from you again!

You're right, of course, the whole trip was fabulous. We had planned the Greek trip for 18 months, but added the Turkey leg (!) a year later while hosting a Turkish exchange student. She is coming back to the states this summer to join us on an expedition to Yellowstone, so I hope to be posting some more nature shots.

This year we've hosted an Israeli Arab girl, so there will probably be another trip in the offing.

BTW, it's rumored that the chandelier shown here may be the largest in the world!

Jon,

Mind? Of course not! Many thanks for highlighting my work--and for hosting the SD group.

Skylar,

Thanks for the like! After 12,000+ views, I guess it was about due for one. :) I hope to get back there for some more pics this summer!
