ttpallam1, I had heard about these structures as, Cappadocia but until I saw this photo it was hard to imagine how they looked. This is the most beautiful depiction of these that I have seen. The answer to your question is BOTH. The structures are natural stone which is eroded by weather over the centuries. The soft stone of these structures was easily cut away and people made their homes inside and they have been occupied for thousands of years (i.e. Late Bronze Age). Cappadocia is also mentioned in the Biblical account given in the book of Acts 2:9. Best regards. -Art
