John Phillips III's conversations

I've seen the other pics. I am the CO now. Feel free to come for a tour next time your down there.

In 1974, I was First Mate on my brother's lobster boat out of Key West. We had a lot of our traps west of the light house, when you could fish there, and on several times we would tie up and visit with the "Coasties," who we knew very well. I remember playing pool in the shack, watching the tarpons roll under the lights of the docks, the butt busting work of lobster fishing and the lush vegetation there. My brother, who still lives in Key West, told me abouut the island being very barren, but this is the first time I've seen a picture of it. It is very sad to see Loggerhead Key in this state.

abandoned is probably a better term, but modern navigation systems are making lighthouses and lots of other aids to navigation systems, like lighthouses obsolete.

17,000 views on Google Earth...no surprise. Fabulous shot.

thank you yes the weather was gorgeous but we did not catch any fish

Not trying to be rude, but those are not native to Florida at all, they are actually an introduced species, but they sure are at home here!

I actually built this Light while assigned to the Coast Guard Cutter VISE out of Saint Petersburg. I will never forget that day, it was very rough and we had to work very quickly to get it done. Thanks for posting a great picture and bringing back those memories!

You can tell it was rough because the piling is not straight (level) but everything else on it is. It's tough to punch them in bad weather.
