东寨港国家级自然保护区属于近海及海岸湿地类型中的红树林沼泽湿地，主要保护对象为红树林及水鸟。红树林是热带、亚热带滨海泥滩上特有的常绿灌木或乔木植物群落，大部分树种属于红树科，生态学上称为红树林，是能生长于海水上的绿色植物。世界上红树林有23科81种，海南有23科41种，最高达10米。很多红树具有奇特的“胎生”繁殖现象，种子在母树上的果实内萌芽长成小苗后，同果实一起从树上掉下来，插入泥滩只要2至3个钟头，就可以成长为新株。如果是落在海水里，则随波逐流，数月不死，逢泥便生根。
