The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur is the name of a Roman Catholic order of nuns who were dedicated to providing education to the poor.
The order was founded in Amiens in 1803, but the opposition of the local bishop to missions outside his diocese led to the moving of headquarters to then French Namur in 1809 and they subsequently became a worldwide order. The Sisters now have foundations in five continents and in 20 countries. At the request of the Scottish Education Department, the Sisters of Notre Dame opened the Dowanhill Training College for Catholic School-Mistresses at Glasgow in 1895. A second convent in Scotland opened at Dumbarton in 1910. Sadly this is the remains of the church which was attached to the school which I attended in the late fifties, As with all things in life times have moved on and the boys and girls schools have now amalgamated under the banner of Our Lady and St Patrick's High School housed in new premises in the near vicinity of the old schools.
this is such a sad photograph for me...very haunting. This was an all girls school and I was taught by the Sisters of Notre Dame at this school in the late fifties. Happy memories but sorry to see it so neglected and come to this sad end. I see the church is also derelict..spent a few hours in contemplation there and I am grateful to the sisters for the education they gave me and the values they instilled in me.

I used to work here in the bar many many moons ago. We always had a great time. Sometimes more fun than the regulars!
What a superb picture.
Beautifully wild.
