AFTER 50 YEARS
It shall be recalled that the Dire Dawa Comprehensive Secondary School, formerly known as Prince Makonnen Secondary School, is the first secondary school in Dire Dawa.

It was established 50 years ago with the objective of accommodating 750 students in order to impart quality education; but today the average number of student in-take is 3,000 yearly. In spite of the fact that it has grown up in age and its student in-take rate has drastically increased, the school’s performance achievement is below all the secondary schools in Dire Dawa.
Amidst of all these ups and downs, the school will be celebrating its 50th Golden Anniversary this year. Taking this occasion as a springboard the former directors, teachers, graduates, the friends of Dire Dawa, the school community, the mayor’s office, the education bureau and educators at large have come together and formed committees in Dire Dawa and Addis Ababa to some how alleviate the problems related with low performance of the students. Selected members of the committee from Addis Ababa went to the school to assess the physical condition of the school.
From the report they brought back, among the many contributing factors, the following have attracted our attention:
•Its computer lab is utterly incomprehensive and disgusting.
•Its laboratory is inconceivably worst than a poor woman’s kitchen
•Although it is a fact that old books should be very well treasured; by the same token new books should be added to address the citizens of this information age with modern thinking and knowledge.
•The front-face building fence deludes the eyes of the beholder for the backside of the compound is fenceless and thus remains hostile for the school community.
•The deadliest scenario comes with a good number of the student body who can’t support themselves even with their daily meals or otherwise.
Yes, it is horrifying; but then again these problems should not blind us to what force there is within us if we all come together and respond to the calls of our high school in a more sincere, orchestrated and harmonious fashion. Beyond any shadow of doubt, we can do miracles and reap the success of our efforts not in thimbles but in buckets; if we only carry in our minds a sack of positive vibration and tact.
Many individuals and organizations have responded positively towards this noble cause locally and from abroad. In view of this movement, it will be unwise not to invite you join this threshold of making pledges for the revival of this school.
By doing this, you will become an honorary member, who will say tomorrow with pride I have made a difference in the development of this school. Come and join others to walk in its hall of fame.
