Pendarves wood was drasticly upgraded by a government scheme employing 14 unemployed men in 1983/4. It was proposed that the boathouse should be re-instated but the nature trust which ran the reserve would not pay for the materials. The main objective to remove Rhododendron and Laurel on a 4 acre section was achieved in 6 months and in a second 6 months the lake was cleared of weed and silt by hand.

The site is likely to have been used as summer pasture from prehistoric times to the medieval period while, from more recent times, tinners’ pits and quarrying complexes can be found.

The Cornwall Wildlife Trust Marine Strandings Network consists of a team of over 120 volunteers who record all reported strandings of organic organisms on Cornwall's coastline.
Although this includes everything from jellyfish to nuts, the volunteers' main activity is recording and photographing all stranded dolphins, whales and porpoises (collectively known as cetaceans) as well as seals, basking sharks and turtles.
