To get there, drive past the Twin Springs BLM campground on the west side of Lake Owyhee. The road gets too rough for most passenger cars as it drops down toward the lake and crosses the Dry Creek culvert. Keep driving until you come to a small turnout in a meadow near the creek and park. Follow the creek up the valley. The valley is marshy and brushy in places but not difficult to hike.
It is now 50 years since Ron and I worked building that trail. It is nice to know that some things can endure for quite awhile. It was TRULY hard work at high altitude. :-) The Trailman (now older in Sag Harbor, NY)
View to the northwest from the saddle. There is an old trail following the bench down to Pop Lake. It is at a different location from that shown on a recent USFS raster topo map.
This is above the intersection of West Eagle Meadows trail and Trail Creek trail. In July of 2013, there was lots of downed timber on this section of West Eagle Meadows trail below Wonker Pass. Trail Creek Trail was not as bad.
This is above the intersection of Trail No. 1943 and Trail No. 1944. Trail No.1944 (Elk Creek) goes from the Minam River to Burger Butte, and Trail No. 1943 goes to Diamond Lake and Tombstone Lake, eventually intersecting with the West Eagle Meadows Trail.
The Trail Creek Trail fords the upper Minam River near this meadow. The old bridge across the Minam River at this location no longer exists (as of 2013).
