Lisbon has a great Metro system. However it is very poorly advertised at the metro street entrance. Just look at this metro station. Apart from the red letter 'M' to the left of the entrance, this looks like the entrance to a public toilet.

The 'Gloria' funicular (tram) Connecting São Pedro de Alcântara to the Praça dos Restauradores - it was the second transport of its kind to be constructed in the city of Lisbon. It was inaugurated on 24th October 1885, using water counterbalance and steam as traction systems - and in 1915 electricity was its source of energy. Declared a National Monument in 2002.

The street-level approach to the Metro in Lisbon is very poor. The stations are very badly advertised above ground. However, once you enter the Lisbon Metro you will be impressed how modern, clean, litter-free and efficient the service is. Also the price for a ticket journey is only €3! This covers almost all the metro system!

Looking south - Run dos Douradores - one of the main pedestrian streets in Lisbon. The temperature here was 38C and I was being killed by the sun!

This is called Campo Pequeno on the Av. da República, Lisbon, Portugal. It is Lisbon's bull fighting square. I am personally very much opposed to this kind of so-called 'sport', however the Portuguese do this differently; in Portugal the bull is not killed (only in Spain), but set free again in the fields. Also the most important Portuguese tradition and way of bullfight is called “pega” – that means to grab in Portuguese. Thus some 10 men get aligned and spaced behind each other in a row, with the front man facing the bull, bare naked hands, trying to grab the bull by the neck when it charges!

This is the Tower of Belém, located south-west of Lisbon on the Tagus River. It is an early 16th century fortification building. Note: all monuments and museums are CLOSED on Mondays!
