The view from Marys Peak, the highest point in Oregon's Coast Range. Overlooking the Willamette Valley, visible on the horizon are five Cascade Peaks (from left): Mt Hood, Mt Jefferson, and the Three Sisters. What is not apparent in the panorama is illustrated in the small inset image. On the day I visited there were literally hundreds if not thousands of Western Meadow Fritillery Butterflies feeding on the wildflowers that carpeted the peak. Slightly more than one inch across their wings, there were so many, you had to watch where you placed your feet on the trail to keep from crushing one or more that were resting on the dirt path.

The Willamette Valley produces most of the grass seed sold in North America. Here, the harvest has just begun.
