The link to a July 1990 newspaper article tells of the death of one hiker in a group of 13 who sought shelter in the Mt. Whitney stone hut during a lightning storm. Three of the 13 had to be airlifted from the summit to a hospital because of their injuries.

Church is St. Michael's Episcopal, on NW corner of 99th and Amsterdam. (The grass in the right foreground is a vacant lot between church and West 100 St.)
Back in the depression, it had a satellite chapel, St. Jude's, on 99th between Columbus and Central Park West. St. Jude's was for the black families who lived in that block and 98th St. St. Michael's itself was all white. EXCEPT on Christmas and Easter, the black folks were "allowed" to attend services at the big church. My parents' families lived in 99th St then and attended St. Jude's.

The science library is shaped like a uterus before it engraved in the concrete is the shape of a sperm cell symbolizing the conception of knowledge.
