Actually when I was a student at Virginia Tech that portion was called Alumni Hall & Donaldson Brown (which indeed was a hotel) was behind it. See the map from 2003: http://www.maps.vt.edu/ADAMap2003-PDFofDWF.pdf

Nope, that's a picture of Holden Hall, facing McBryde (obscured by Holden) from the sidewalk behind Patton. Notice the tower on the right corner and so on. Major Williams (the other Williams) is in background on right behind the trees. Cheers
